Why should we read fairy tales to our children?
Reading time: 2′
Once upon a time was a beautifully crafted story meant to convey messages and values to children of all ages
The only way to succeed was by describing situations in which the protagonists were mythical figures, monsters and animals, but also ordinary people who were entangled in the networks of the fairy tale.
This short story describes the definition of a fairy tale and the greatness of fairy tales. Experts say that lullabies and stories are the ideal way for parents to lull their children to sleep.
For children, fairy tales are small unreal journeys that they need to understand the world and develop a way of thinking. Through the story, they expand their experiences, enrich their vocabulary, become linguists and strengthen their narrative ability and imagination. It is very common for a child to convey in his own unique way, a story he liked and change it completely. Many times, the fairy tale loses its message, maybe even its meaning, but the child gains in creativity and expressiveness. At that moment, his imagination is activated without qualms and limits and his thinking comes out of the small boxes that society is used to putting it in.
Fairy tales play an important role in the formation of the child's character but also in his social and emotional maturation as they are quite instructive in nature.
The child manages to define behaviors and distinguish good from bad or fair from unfair. He also learns that problems, if one tries hard enough, can be solved and at the same time he sees different ways of solving problems. Even the most difficult things, such as death or destruction, are faced and overcome in fairy tales.
The child identifies with the heroes and often carries them with him for a long time.
He manages to manage his emotions and, wearing the mask of the hero, to express them. Through the story, his hidden desires find a way out and his dreams come alive. In this way, the child is freed, calms down, “unloads” his burdens and feels that everything is possible.
The role of the fairy tale is of course also entertaining.
Fairy tales create funny images, mythical worlds, comic heroes, describe “blunders” and misfortunes and have a large dose of exaggeration. This exaggeration fascinates children, keeps them on their toes and pushes them out of narrow limits. But even though the fairy tale is a journey out of bounds, it always comes to a conclusion and usually good wins in the end. And this, apart from educating the child, offers him relief and justification.
